Combating Pet Smells 101: How to get rid of animal smells in your home

Pets bring so much love and happiness into our daily lives, but they often introduce unwanted odours into the home too. Sometimes, paw-rents may not even realise their home smells of their beloved dog, cat, rabbit or hamster, until guests visit and comment on the… aroma. But with some strategic techniques, you can keep your home smelling fresh and odour free. Here’s how.

1) Vacuum with a pet-friendly vacuum cleaner

Carpets and furniture can trap a lot of pet fur and dander, which causes the dreaded “pet smell” to accumulate. While you can use any vacuum to suck up fur, hair and dust, it is recommended to use a pet-friendly model like one from Gtech’s K9 range. These vacuum cleaners are not only more effective at picking up fur, they are also designed with aluminium parts to resist the damage that coarse fur can cause on the machinery.

With handheldas well as upright versions to choose from, you'll find one to suit your home setup.

2) Mop your floors

After vacuuming, mop all floor surfaces with a disinfecting floor cleaner to wipe away any remaining dust and debris as well as target patches that you may not have initially noticed, such as puke or pee spots. Pay particular attention to corners in your home where your pet likes to hideaway at, such as under tables or behind sofas.

3) Clean your air filters

Remember to regularly clean or change the filters of your air conditioners and air purifiers as clogged filters don’t work as efficiently at keeping your home smelling fresh and clean. At the same time, do wash your vacuum cleaner’s filter and clear out its dirt bin to prevent pet odours from accumulating within the machine itself. To help with this, Gtech’s K9 range comes with replaceable scented tabs that fit in the filter so you’ll freshen up your home as you vacuum.

4) Air your home

There’s nothing like fresh air to get rid of pesky odours. Simply open your windows and doors and turn on the fan to allow air to circulate. Your house will smell as good as new in no time at all. Just be sure that you have installed pet gates and window screens to prevent your pets from accidentally escaping. Alternatively, simply leave them in a separate, closed room for your peace of mind.

5) Wash your pet’s stuff

Don’t forget that your pet’s toys, bedding, food and water bowls need to be cleaned too or they will contribute to the unpleasant smell in your home. You can use your vacuum cleaner’s crevice tool and dusting brush on your pet’s bed, pillow and soft toys to suck up trapped fur and dander. Other belongings like dishes and plastic or rubber toys should be washed with detergent.

6) Clear the litter box

Besides scooping out litter at least once a day, you should also replace all the litter every few weeks. This applies all pets that use a litter box indoors, including cats, rabbits and hamsters. You can also mix baking soda into the litter to absorb unwanted odours.
